10 steps to easily archive a chat with Storify

Recently I have been asked by several people on twitter for advice on using Storify.

Storify is an incredible way to archive a twitter chat. I came about this through #whatisschool and the need to have an archive of the trend setting, fast paced chat. These archives are stored under my account on Storify so that anyone, anywhere, anytime can go back to check the stream of conversation and gain an insight into the topic that was discussed. Although it is not just Twitter chats you can archive, my guide will focus on this.

Step 1: Go to and create a FREE account




Step 2: Once you are logged in you will see your homepage. On this page you can see Featured users and Featured stories. To create a new ‘story’ to archive your conversations, click “New Story” in the top right hand corner of the page.








Step 3: You will then see this page below. This is the Storify interface. On the left is your ‘whiteboard’ for adding conversations. On the right is your ‘sources’ of information.

Step 4: Enter a headline. This is the title of your chat or conversation. It is searchable and you could include your hashtag in this (see this archive link from #whatisschool as an example of what I write)






Step 5: Enter a Description. This is where you give more details about your archive. What will people find when reading the stream of conversation. What will people learn about – like an introduction to the story, it hooks your audience in.

Step 6: You are now ready to source your archive. On the right hand side you can find your conversations by searching from Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Youtube and more. Choose the social media you want to search (in this case Twitter) and type in your hashtag or search term (e.g. #whatisschool) and hit ‘enter’ on your keyboard.






Step 7: You will be given a stream of the latest tweets using this hashtag. For this reason, it is best if you ‘Storify’ your conversation immediately after you have finished.










Step 8: To move the conversation into your ‘story’ you can scroll down the right hand side and continue to click on ‘Show more results’ until you have selected the timeframe of tweets that you want to archive (i.e. a 1 hour chat). You can see the times tweets were sent, just like you can on twitter. Once you have selected your tweets, click on ‘add them all’ and all selected tweets will now be in your story. You can also ‘reorder’ your tweets so they are in time order. I always post my chats from oldest to newest so it is easier to follow.









Step 9: You can now click publish and your story is live! You will know it is live because the green ‘published’ box will be visible.









Step 10: You can click on the arrow beside the green “published” box on the lefthand side and click on ‘view published story’. This will take you to your published ‘story’. From this page you can click on ‘Notify’ to tweet out the link automatically to people who were involved by ticking their names when prompted and clicking Notify. You can also set it up as a template, embed it on a blog or wiki, re-edit your story or, by clicking on the 3 dots (…) you can share it via other social media, make your story private, change / customise your URL and many more options.
