When given a voice in education, students say it how it is. Here is an interesting reflection from my Year 5 students.
In response to the amazing sound clip article posted a few weeks ago – “What Makes a GREAT Teacher?” – I asked my students to think critically about what other parts of our Learning Environment are critical. The immediate response was “us”. “Without the students there wouldn’t be a school”. I then challenged them by saying “great, so What Makes a GREAT student?” and here are there responses:

What I find interesting in this reflective piece is the honesty that speaks volume throughout all students responses. They genuinely believe that these qualities are important to succeeding in the fast paced environment that is school.
There are several common themes including: listening skills, positive attitude, well behaved, hardworking, innovative, creative, respectful, proud of their work and polite.
I would be interested in hearing responses to this question from schools around the world. A global perspective in learning is critical and my students and I would love to know how people around the world think. I challenge you to ask your students the same question and post their responses. Looking forward to receiving your comments and ideas soon via this blog or twitter @mrkempnz

The Year 7 students will be using this data to help in the planning and development of their Ultimate Learning Environment which is on-going.
