I have always wanted to be that fast moving person that leads the way in what they are doing. Don’t get me wrong I don’t like or ever want to be perceived as being the best (or even great for that matter) but I really enjoy challenging myself to be the best that I can be while still understanding that there will always be someone better than me or someone doing newer things than I am.
This year I have been appointed acting AP in my school which is extremely exciting and by far the biggest advancement in my professional career. I am very excited to have this opportunity and to challenge myself in this way. However, I believe that the “next steps” in any career can often be few and far between and when opportunities arise you must jump at them and not run away from them. Some steps seem very small but these are often the most important and hardest to get a hold of, as I have found out. For me the most challenging next step (and most daunting) is to present at an ICT conference.
I have just taken the all mighty step (big for me) of applying to present at U-Learn 2011 in Rotorua later this year. I have attended the event 2 times now and this time I want to go to that next step and share my learning with others. I am nervous and only applied at the last minute (today) when convinced by several people but it is an exciting step in my professional career. After all of these interactions only one made me actually put pen on paper (or fingers on keys) when it occurred this morning at school. It is hard to think that anyone would want to come and listen to me talk about what I do in my classroom with i-pads but it is something that I need to do and want to share. Whether 1 person comes or 30 people come I can not wait!!!
How can I expect the children in my classroom to challenge themselves and keep getting better and striving for success when I am not confident enough to continue in my development as a leader in my chosen career.
In my classroom today something really struck me when I was chatting with one of my students before school about their weekend. She told me about her new laptop that she got for her birthday and how her parents did not know how to set up the computer. She told me that she had to explain everything to them and she set the computer up all by herself. She then went on to tell her friends that she never noticed she knew so much (not only about computers but then she started talking about Math strategies too) and how much she had learnt this year. She was amazed and this started a huge interactive conversation in my classroom at 8.45am all about learning. WOW I thought to myself!! This is cool … and that is when I realised that I am making a difference and that I have no reason not to present and share that with others when the student’s in my classroom have the confidence to do things they never thought or imagined they would be able to do. That is the ONE thing that made me send in my application to present at U-Learn above everything else that dozens of people told me. One interaction with one student made the difference!
As an educator we should be willing to teach but also to learn and to share. I hope that I am accepted to share my presentation at U-Learn this year. I am both excited and nervous at the thought of sharing my learning with others.
As the student’s in my class would say (and as our class motto reads) …. BRING IT ON!!!
